thank you

Seriously, I am blown away.

Bliss Events was born out of an earnest desire to give a man and a woman the best possible beginning to their new life together. I wanted to help overwhelmed brides pull together an amazing day without completely breaking the bank and losing sanity in the process. I wanted to create a business that could help other women like me have an opportunity to help support their families.

I’m also just a homemaker. Raising babies. Working on my marriage to the very best best friend I could have. I am OVERWHELMED by the response of people in my community who are helping me help others make their dreams come true.

My first wedding season is full! I can’t believe I can say that out loud 🙂

While I am sorry to say I will not get to work with any additional brides in 2016, I want to give a huge SHOUT OUT to the beautiful women I do get to work with. If you’ve got a Big Day happening in 2017, please reserve your date as soon as possible. I soooooo want to meet more amazing ladies. Plus, I’m offering a special gift to those who reserve their date before the end of 2016.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

P.S. As a result of the extremely positive support, I’m happy to say that Bliss Events is growing! Make sure we’re friends on Facebook so you don’t miss out on exciting news about growing our team (!!!), expanding our services, and….well, I don’t want to give it all away 😉

Not gonna lie, I’m SO excited to host Shana Lynne Photography for today’s stop on the vendor tour. I have to step outside of the professional realm for a moment and talk to you from a personal level. Why?

Shana is the big sis of my childhood BFF. I watched this force of nature as a wide-eyed child and marveled at her beauty and talent in EVERY endeavor she’s put her hand to. She is creative, she is smart, she works hard, and she does not stop until she’s given something her best.

Now let me put my pro shoes back on. How can I say this girl is going to be one of the best wedding photographers Springfield has ever seen? Because she is creative. She is smart. She works hard. And she will not stop until she’s given you her very best work. 🙂

Big, giant, warm welcome to Shana Ortega of Shana Lynne Photography.

Hello! Tell us about yourself.

I started my business, Shana Lynne Photography, in October of 2014. I have to admit, I didn’t come at it with some major business plan. I loved photography and had been a hobbyist for years. I threw out the notion to my Facebook friends and before I knew it, friends were inquiring about prices and booking sessions. Now, here I am, sixteen months later and I just have to say I feel like I finally found my niche and I love it! I offer photography for newborns, children, families, Seniors, weddings, couples—basically a wide range. I am continuing to learn and grow in my experience and I am so excited for what the future holds!

What was a favorite wedding moment for you?

One of my favorite wedding moments to witness would definitely be the moment I watched my brother see his bride for the first time as she walked down the aisle. They have a great love story, with her really being his first girlfriend and then his wife. To see the look on his face as he bowed his head and cried, I could only tear up behind my lens. It was a wonderful moment to be part of!

Who are some of your favorite vendors to work alongside?

As far as favorite vendors to work with, I think my favorite DJ so far has been Cash Williams. He was so professional. He continually communicated with me throughout the event, making sure that we were on the same page so all of the important events were captured and no one was taken by surprise. I really appreciated his friendly and thoughtful attitude towards me. After all, it’s not a competition; we’re all there to make that day the best for the bride and groom! For cakes, I’ve always loved Celebrations by Sonja, her cakes are both beautiful and taste delicious. I’m confident that the Springfield area has a great group of wedding vendors to work with and look forward to building those relationships as my business continues.

Tell us about a wedding fiasco you witnessed.

I learned right away that wedding days rarely ever go as planned (so brides, give yourself some leeway!) Wedding days can be stressful, for the photographer too! One “fiasco” in particular was during my first wedding. I was at the reception venue waiting on the bride and groom to arrive. The sun was setting and I was pacing wondering where they were because it was only about a three-minute drive from the church. When I had left them they were in the car getting ready to pull out. Twenty minutes later they were nowhere to be seen and the natural light for pictures was quickly fading. Finally, they pulled in, very stressed out themselves. Apparently their car died in the middle of the road and the cops came. Needless to say the poor bride wasn’t happy. We made the best of it–we took the fifteen minutes of light we had left and just focused on bride and groom pictures because those are definitely the priority!

Share some advice you have for brides planning their weddings.

My advice is to remember what’s important for your wedding, and put your money there. In today’s world we sometimes get carried away with thinking that the bigger, newer, more expensive things we invest for our weddings must equal better, longer, happier marriages. In the end, it’s your marriage that matters. However your budget is limited, set priorities accordingly. For me, it was pictures, flowers, and food. I also had an amazing and organized best friend who was my planner, which relieved so much stress. If you don’t already have someone helping you, I highly recommend a wedding planner so you can enjoy one of the most important days of your life! And lastly, take in every moment of your big day. I remember walking around my reception and just taking “mental pictures” of everything. The people laughing at the tables, the couples on the dance floor, the beautiful cake, the wonderful food. I wanted to remember every moment! I refused to be one of those brides that said, “It was a blur, I don’t really remember much of anything.” Now, ten years later, I still have all of those mental photographs, as well as some pretty amazing professional ones too. 😉

amycakes

Almost every bride I’ve spoken with has mentioned Amycakes in their quest to score the perfect wedding cake. I’ve heard ‘Amycakes’ so many times I thought I better get myself down to their bakery on Walnut to introduce myself and try some goodies.
First thoughts: “What a great location! Historic District on Walnut Street. I’m a little jealous.”
Second thoughts: “Oh, how adorable! Look at this bistro table in this corner, and the scrumptious display in that corner.”
Third thought: “I should definitely order something.”
After which I proceeded to order the Elvis Cupcake, Vanilla Almond Cupcake, Boston Creme Parfait (!!!), and, ummm, three Monster cookies.
I then assured the lovely lady behind the counter that I was definitely going to share all this with my husband and children. Ahem.
Apparently, Amy needs no introduction from me to the Springfield community. It’s just a privilege to have her here 🙂
Hello! Tell us a little about Amycakes.
Amycakes is a made-from-scratch, family-owned bakery, specializing in wedding cakes, party cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cake truffles and cinnamon rolls.
amycakes navy
How did you get into the wedding industry and why do you stay?

When Amycakes first opened, we only did a couple of weddings a year. We gradually did more and more, and now it is a huge part of our business! We love designing the perfect cake with each couple, and it’s always fun when we deliver to see the venue that matches our cake design. But the most rewarding part of all is hearing back from brides or their families that their guests were raving about how the cake tasted.

amycakes white and cream

In what ways have you seen weddings change since you joined the market?

When we opened six years ago, we were making more modern, smooth or geometric wedding designs. We were designing more cakes covered in fondant or with fondant details. Now we see a lot more vintage styles—textured buttercream, fresh or burlap flowers, or semi-frosted cakes. We love this style!

amys wedding

What types of services do you offer?

We offer made-from-scratch desserts, including over 40 cake flavors, cupcakes, cookies, cake truffles, and cinnamon rolls. We specialize in wedding cakes and dessert bars. We offer delivery and set-up in Springfield, but for orders outside of our delivery range, we are happy to box the order for pick-up.

amycakes mint

What creative ways have you seen brides save money?

We are always happy to work with a bride with any budget, so if couples are trying to save, we can give them several options. Round cakes of various sizes will cost less than one large tiered cake, and several round cakes on various pedestals or plates look beautiful on a wedding table. Brides are also able to provide their guests with multiple flavor offerings this way. We also offer our “Amycakes Style,” which is semi-frosted with gourmet toppings, which is less per serving than a traditionally iced and decorated wedding cake.

Schedule a tasting or consultation by calling 417-831-6095, or send an email to help@amycakesbakery.com.  Visit our website for photos or more information at amycakesbakery.com.

ritzy ranch

Wander just north of Springfield and you’ll find the perfect barn location where elegant meets rustic: the Ritzy Ranch. Dan and Teri Presley originally opened the property to house antiques and a bakery. Because Teri has a natural ability to pull together events that will make your jaw drop, these talented creatives turned their focus to making wedding day dreams come true.

When I say talented, I mean EXTREMELY gifted. I mean EXTRAORDINARY. Like, I want to be them when I grow up.

And the venue!! The beautiful outdoor courtyard serves as the backdrop for the ceremony. Guests step inside to an interior that is positively breathtaking- chandeliers suspended above round tables and a dance floor space that is sure to make a memorable celebration.

Maybe the best part? Dan and Teri include extras as part of the price. We’re talking everything from antique decor to disposable dinnerware. Dan doubles as a DJ with mad skillz and Teri has a looooong history creating beautiful and delicious wedding cakes, so couples can receive these services at competitive rates as well. They are absolutely dedicated to making sure their couples receive the very best. A huge welcome to Ritzy Ranch!

How did you get into the wedding industry and why do you stay?

We have been doing wedding cakes for 25 years and we know how expensive and stressful weddings can be for the bride and her family. We decided to open a venue where everything is included so they don’t have to worry about anything and still keep the price competitive with other venues.

ritzy ranch pergola

In what ways have you seen weddings change since you joined the market?

Wow, that’s a loaded question! Every year the brides have new creative ideas and it’s a blast helping them make their ideas a reality!!

ritzy ranch bright colors

Tell us about a wedding fiasco you witnessed.

The best man didn’t try on his pants before the wedding day and they were about 5” too short – mad dash to purchase new pants before the wedding! Just remember, there will always be some little something that isn’t the way you thought it would or should be – don’t stress – chances are (unless his pants are just way too short) no one noticed but you!!

ritzy ranch ceremony

What was a favorite wedding moment for you?

Every wedding when the bride or her family come up to us at the end of the night and tell us how happy they have been with our Ritzy Ranch and how well we have served them. And we have done wedding cakes sooooo long that we are now doing cakes for the children of the couples we made cakes for over 20 years ago – second generation wedding cakes – what an honor and privilege that is!!

ritzy ranch

What types of services do you offer?

We offer our indoor, climate controlled barn venue with 20 crystal chandeliers (where Ritzy meets Ranch) and a beautiful outdoor courtyard with romantic lighting and wedding pergola. Our in-house bakery can create your one of kind wedding cake and you can dance all night long with our DJ service!

ritzy ranch gold cake

What are some of your favorite things about the services you offer?

I love the fact that we supply everything the bride needs to decorate her wedding from beautiful centerpieces, mirrors, wood slabs & candles, right down to all the linens, plates, cups, napkins and silverware. We try to keep it worry-free for the bride – all she has to do is bring her personal flare and wedding colors!!

Tell us about your favorite wedding to work with, ever.

Hahaha! We started to discuss this and both of us came up with a dozen or so favorites. Every bride has been absolutely beautiful and who doesn’t love a great party?? But if we had to pick one… probably our very first because the first is always special and this couple was amazing!!

ritzy ranch bride

What creative ways have you seen brides save money?

One of our brides, who had eight bridesmaids, wanted to spread the colors of her bouquet throughout the venue so we added fruit jars with cold water to eight of the tables and when the bridesmaids came inside after the wedding they each placed their bouquet in a jar on one of the tables. Fresh flowers on eight tables instantly at no additional cost- pretty creative way to save money if you ask me!!

Share some advice you have for brides planning their weddings.

It’s your wedding, beautiful bride. Don’t let anyone talk you into something you don’t want on your special day. Be brave and let YOUR style shine!!

Who are some of your favorite vendors to work alongside?

Sugar Snap Images, Kellie Michelle Photography, and Christine Bonnivier Photography.  Mexican Villa, Zio’s and Curly Q’s for catering, Dixie at the Flower Patch and S-Bon Rentals.

Thanks, Dan and Teri from Ritzy Ranch! Please adopt me.

aviary

Is there anyone in Springfield who doesn’t love Aviary Cafe?

The MASTERS of the art of French countryside finery here in southwest Missouri- flowering birdcages, crepes at all hours of the day (!!), and pastries-to-die-for…can I ask my question again? Is there anyone in Springfield who doesn’t love Aviary?

Anyone?

I got the privilege of sitting down with Heather McGuigan, a catering manager extraordinaire, at the Aviary Event Center recently. I had NO IDEA they offer so many services to local wedding couples. As we chatted about french fancy-pants desserts, the Bite-Size Sweets featured in this season’s 417Bride, and a special bun recipe they created to help personalize one couple’s catering menu, I was charmed.

So we know everyone LOVES the cafe- tell us about Aviary’s jump into the wedding industry.

Over the years we’ve had many couples come to our restaurants to celebrate special occasions as well as hosting many bridal showers.  When we were asked to cater a wedding, it was only natural to branch out and continue to offer fresh, quality food that the bride and groom could experience on this very special day.  It’s wonderful to see a romance begin at Aviary and flourish. We continue in the wedding industry because we see the amazing response and gratitude that we get from our brides, grooms, and their families.

aviary dining room

In what ways have you seen weddings chance since you joined the market?

Weddings have become less formal and much more about the personality of the bride and groom.  It’s been fun to see so many unique ideas come to life.  Whether the couple chooses to have a brunch instead of dinner or a crepe station rather than wedding cake, the wedding should be an expression of the couples love for each other and their common interests.

aviary wedding cake

What types of services do you offer?

We have had so many requests for bridal parties, receptions, and rehearsal dinners that we recently opened the Aviary Event Center.   With the same unique style of the other restaurants,  it’s perfect for small, intimate groups of 100 or less and offers more space and privacy.   If one of our unique venues does not fit the wedding needs, we are happy to cater the same great  food to many of the wonderful local venues.  Enjoy a crepe station with personal chef, delicious miniature pastries, or our French made wedding cakes, we have a wide array of sweets that will also delight your palate.

aviary spread

What are some of your favorite things about the services you offer?

We treat every event, from start to finish, as if we’re serving guests in our own home. Our staff provides the kind of warm hospitality that will help make each event a true success, and we are proud to share our great food from scratch.   Our unique style is infused in everything we do, from the posh little French pastries to the crepe station with a personal chef, we want every aspect to be as unique as the bride and groom.  Instead of a cake serving the bride and group can even spin the very first crepe together.  They love it!

Share some advice you have for the bride and groom planning their wedding.

The wedding day will come and go in the blink of an eye.  Make sure to hire vendors that will treat your wedding day like their own and keep the anxiety at a minimum.  Hire someone to set up, clean up, and prepare the food. The added stress and time that it takes away from you and your family could lead to missing a wonderful memory.

To connect with Aviary, visit AviaryCafe.com or Facebook. And, um, go get yourself a pastry. You deserve it.

Flour + sugar + butter = best invention ever.

The bride thinks about the dress, the invites, the flowers, the favors, the everlasting list of details. The groom thinks about? The CAKE.

We’re heading a bit farther north tonight to Back Porch Bakery, a homegrown sweets extravaganza in Bolivar, Missouri. Short and sweet…just like a cupcake 😉

Can I tell you a secret about Jessica?

This girl knows how to get it done. If you’ve seen her work, you know what I’m talking about. For as long as I’ve known her (and I’m happy to say I’ve had the privilege of knowing her a long time 🙂 ), these are things that are true about her: friendly beyond expectation, talented without even trying, and professionally ON. THE. BALL.

You learn these things about her when you read her precious family posts on her blog, or when you meet her in person for the first time, or when you check out the super-fab and BEAUTIFUL JYP Bridal Guide she created because she doesn’t want her clients to worry about a thing.

Anyone handy with a camera (or cameraphone. Ahem.) can get a detail shot of the cake, the dress, the kiss.

But if you want to tell the story, call Jessica. When you want to keep the memory, call Jessica. When you want someone with a passionate commitment to creatively capturing life…call Jessica.

Got it? Call Jessica. 🙂

Hello! Tell us about yourself.

Hi! I’m Jessica! Originally from Missouri, I spent 5 years living in Hawaii and Washington, but am happy to now be serving the greater Springfield, Missouri area once again. I am the proud wife to a military veteran and a mommy to two crazy monkeys disguised as children. I am an internet & technology junkie. My primary diet consists of lots and lots of coffee! I am an avid reader, chronic over-punctuator!!?..!!, and I believe that music heals the soul. I have been blessed to be a part of the portrait & wedding industry for over 6 years now, where I specialize in lifestyle engagement and wedding photography. Photography is so much more than just a hobby or a job for me, it is a life source. I truly feel at home when one of my cameras are in my hand.

How did you get into the wedding industry?

My husband is a military veteran of 10 years so [at first] I could not offer wedding services, due to the military moving us on a whim. As soon as we learned we were moving back to Missouri I immediately started booking weddings. I was lucky that I had brides willing to invest with me, even when we were still 2,000+ miles away. Once we moved, I never looked back. I have always had a weakness when it comes to a good love story and my heart will always lie in capturing the moment when a couple commits to spending the rest of their lives with one another. I always say that even if I won the lottery-I will still be photographing weddings.

What is a favorite wedding moment for you?

I personally have two favorite parts to the wedding day. I love watching the couple get dressed and prepared for the ceremony. The anticipation and excitement is always such a fun moment to be a part of! Also, the first look, whether staged or when the bride first walks down the aisle, it gets me every…single..time. I cannot count the number of times I have cried at weddings. My heart is invested in each of my couple’s stories.

What types of services do you offer?

While I do take a limited amount of family sessions during the fall, I primarily provide engagement and wedding photography. My goal is to help keep the planning process as easy as possible. All of my couples have their own personal client site where they can where they can keep track of their contract, payment plan, and any applicable questionnaires related to their wedding planning. I also created a bridal guide to help them plan and make the most out of their wedding photography!

What creative ways have you seen brides save money?

I have seen a few “potluck” weddings. The couple provided the main dish and asked guests to bring a favorite (along with a copy of the recipe) as a side dish. This helped save on catering costs, as well as helped build their first cookbook filled with love from their family and friends.

Many couples make their own floral and decorative pieces as well. I do suggest investing in your bridal bouquet, even if you DIY many of the other floral arrangements. If the bride has a gorgeous bouquet, I can make the entire day look like there were beautiful florals everywhere. I highly recommend getting your DREAM bouquet and investing less in the bridesmaids bouquet since they will not be photographed nearly as much!

Share some advice you have for brides planning their weddings.

Make your wedding photography a priority. (I know that sounds like something I have to say as a photographer.) The truth is, once the day is over; the food has been eaten, flowers have wilted and your dress is hanging in the closet – your photos are what you have left. That is what you will have to look back at to remember this amazing day and be able to pass down to your children and grandchildren!

PLEASE Consider an un-plugged wedding! Not only does it allow your guests to truly be a part of your ceremony without the distraction of technology, but your photographer will be able to get much better photos. There is nothing worse than a photographer missing your first kiss because “Uncle Bob” stepped out into the aisle and blocked our shot! We want to ensure you have all of those key moments.

Don’t forget to take time for yourselves! Remember that your MARRIAGE is more important than the wedding. The wedding will come and go in a matter of hours but your marriage needs to stand the test of time. Continue to make time for one another, even with all that needs to get done.

Who are some of your favorite vendors to work alongside?

I love being a part of the local wedding community! There are honestly just too many amazing vendors to name, but I do offer a “Vendors We Love” list on my website! Hiring a wedding planner also helps assist in finding the perfect vendors to fit your needs and personality. When you are planning, make sure you aren’t just choosing by price alone. You want to find people and businesses that you click with because that will ensure you are much more likely to truly have your dream day!
(P.S. Any bride who books with us thru Bliss Events gets a $200 credit towards their Wedding Collection. Awesome, right?)

SAY WHAT?!? That makes my heart happy.

Welcome back to the Bliss Vendor Tour! We’re kicking off another great week FULL of interviews and photos with amazing wedding professionals in the Springfield, Missouri area. If you missed last week, don’t forget to poke around a bit to find Haseltine Estate, He Loves Me Flowers, Touch and Flame Catering, and Mandy Evans Photography.
Today we’re stepping just southeast of town to a peaceful corner of the world in Rogersville. For ten years, lovely ladies in big white dresses have chosen to exchange vows with their beloveds in this serene grove of cedar trees. A giant, open-armed welcome to Dodi Thomas from Samuel Cedars Chapel and Event Center!
Hello! Tell us about yourself.
Our property was originally owned by my grandparents, Elmer and Lucille Samuel, and has a beautiful grove of cedar trees Grandpa had not really seen any value in. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!  My husband and I thought it was a beautiful spot and decided to clear part of the space for an outdoor wedding chapel.  This year marks our 10th anniversary and we have held almost 500 weddings.  It is wonderful to be able to witness couples starting their lives together and knowing that we have been a small part of that. I think if Grandpa could see it today, he would see that those cedar trees have found purpose after all!

Why do you love the wedding industry?
It is fun to help these couples on their big day!  It has grown into a full-time business that has allowed me to be more available to my family as well, which is wonderful! People often ask, “Did you dream of doing this all along?”  Not really 🙂  When the brides started coming out to tour the location, they expressed  a need for not only the outdoor chapel, but also a larger reception space.  We expanded our original plan for occupancy in the reception hall to accommodate larger groups and brides saw this as a great option!  Over the years, we have tried to add services and what is included with the rental to meet the needs of the couples and give them the most we can for their money.

What types of services do you offer?
Some extras included in our package are:
  • Set up of tables and chairs, including linens
  • Sound person/equipment for the wedding
  • Assistance w/parking
  • One hour Rehearsal
  • Monthly Open Houses for planning time for our brides
We also offer a range of optional services, like officiating, wedding directing, centerpieces and other rentals, outdoor arbor decor, decorating, onsite catering from Catering Creations, and onsite DJ services.
What are some of the favorite things about the services you offer?
Brides really like the fact that they can get so many things checked off their list when they rent with us – from the venue, the caterer, the DJ, a wedding director, some of the decor and access to many of our favorite vendors at our Open Houses.  It is peace of mind for them to know that they don’t have to do everything on their own and it makes it so convenient that we offer so many services at our location.   Because we have been in the industry for so long, with input from former brides, we have been able to offer the items that are most important  to make it less stressful for them. Discussing each couple’s vision helps form friendships– we have even had couples who have been married here attend other weddings held here and been able to see their growing families and it is truly a beautiful thing!

For better or worse, share a few memorable wedding moments with us.
WOW!  There is always a story to tell – some I definitely won’t repeat at this time!  One time, the minister for the service did not show up.  The caterer for the night was a friend of ours and also had performed many weddings. The wedding was themed so he was going to need to wear the appropriate costume.  He grabbed a Bible from my son’s room, put on the robe that was planned for the original minister and the ceremony went on without a hitch (as far as any of the guests knew).  On another occasion, the minister was the only one that showed up on the day of the wedding!  The couple had cancelled the wedding, but forgot to tell the minister that they were not getting married, so he showed up at the appropriate time dressed for a wedding.
One of my absolute favorite stories- there was a family who have had two of their family members have weddings at Samuel Cedar.  At the first wedding, one of the young ladies at the wedding met a young gentleman.  Those two went on to date each other and were engaged by the time the second wedding happened. Although that couple did not get married here at our facility, the wedding that took place here brought them together in the first place – love it!
Any advice for brides planning their wedding?
Make sure that you look at what all is included at each of the venues to find the place that works best for you.  You can love the look of a facility, but if their package doesn’t include much you end up spending much more! Stay true to the things that you really want included for your special day.  For instance, if you really want a bouquet of real flowers for your wedding, try to work that into the budget and spend a little less on something that is less important to you. Some brides want to do everything for themselves instead of letting others help.  Let your friends and family have a little joy by helping you on your day.  Sometimes doing everything yourself only adds more stress and doesn’t give you as much time to just enjoy the moment!
Thanks, Dodi! So happy to have you here!

Wanna know one of my favorite things about being a wedding planner?

The consultation.

love hearing big day dreams from recently engaged brides. I love hearing how two people met, built a relationship, and fell in love. I love hearing the unique ideas those two people have for celebrating that love.
