aviary

Is there anyone in Springfield who doesn’t love Aviary Cafe?

The MASTERS of the art of French countryside finery here in southwest Missouri- flowering birdcages, crepes at all hours of the day (!!), and pastries-to-die-for…can I ask my question again? Is there anyone in Springfield who doesn’t love Aviary?

Anyone?

I got the privilege of sitting down with Heather McGuigan, a catering manager extraordinaire, at the Aviary Event Center recently. I had NO IDEA they offer so many services to local wedding couples. As we chatted about french fancy-pants desserts, the Bite-Size Sweets featured in this season’s 417Bride, and a special bun recipe they created to help personalize one couple’s catering menu, I was charmed.

So we know everyone LOVES the cafe- tell us about Aviary’s jump into the wedding industry.

Over the years we’ve had many couples come to our restaurants to celebrate special occasions as well as hosting many bridal showers.  When we were asked to cater a wedding, it was only natural to branch out and continue to offer fresh, quality food that the bride and groom could experience on this very special day.  It’s wonderful to see a romance begin at Aviary and flourish. We continue in the wedding industry because we see the amazing response and gratitude that we get from our brides, grooms, and their families.

In what ways have you seen weddings chance since you joined the market?

Weddings have become less formal and much more about the personality of the bride and groom.  It’s been fun to see so many unique ideas come to life.  Whether the couple chooses to have a brunch instead of dinner or a crepe station rather than wedding cake, the wedding should be an expression of the couples love for each other and their common interests.

What types of services do you offer?

We have had so many requests for bridal parties, receptions, and rehearsal dinners that we recently opened the Aviary Event Center.   With the same unique style of the other restaurants,  it’s perfect for small, intimate groups of 100 or less and offers more space and privacy.   If one of our unique venues does not fit the wedding needs, we are happy to cater the same great  food to many of the wonderful local venues.  Enjoy a crepe station with personal chef, delicious miniature pastries, or our French made wedding cakes, we have a wide array of sweets that will also delight your palate.

aviary spread

What are some of your favorite things about the services you offer?

We treat every event, from start to finish, as if we’re serving guests in our own home. Our staff provides the kind of warm hospitality that will help make each event a true success, and we are proud to share our great food from scratch.   Our unique style is infused in everything we do, from the posh little French pastries to the crepe station with a personal chef, we want every aspect to be as unique as the bride and groom.  Instead of a cake serving the bride and group can even spin the very first crepe together.  They love it!

Share some advice you have for the bride and groom planning their wedding.

The wedding day will come and go in the blink of an eye.  Make sure to hire vendors that will treat your wedding day like their own and keep the anxiety at a minimum.  Hire someone to set up, clean up, and prepare the food. The added stress and time that it takes away from you and your family could lead to missing a wonderful memory.

Flour + sugar + butter = best invention ever.

The bride thinks about the dress, the invites, the flowers, the favors, the everlasting list of details. The groom thinks about? The CAKE.

We’re heading a bit farther north tonight to Back Porch Bakery, a homegrown sweets extravaganza in Bolivar, Missouri. Short and sweet…just like a cupcake 😉

Can I tell you a secret about Jessica?

This girl knows how to get it done. If you’ve seen her work, you know what I’m talking about. For as long as I’ve known her (and I’m happy to say I’ve had the privilege of knowing her a long time 🙂 ), these are things that are true about her: friendly beyond expectation, talented without even trying, and professionally ON. THE. BALL.

You learn these things about her when you read her precious family posts on her blog, or when you meet her in person for the first time, or when you check out the super-fab and BEAUTIFUL JYP Bridal Guide she created because she doesn’t want her clients to worry about a thing.

Anyone handy with a camera (or cameraphone. Ahem.) can get a detail shot of the cake, the dress, the kiss.

But if you want to tell the story, call Jessica. When you want to keep the memory, call Jessica. When you want someone with a passionate commitment to creatively capturing life…call Jessica.

Got it? Call Jessica. 🙂

Hello! Tell us about yourself.

Hi! I’m Jessica! Originally from Missouri, I spent 5 years living in Hawaii and Washington, but am happy to now be serving the greater Springfield, Missouri area once again. I am the proud wife to a military veteran and a mommy to two crazy monkeys disguised as children. I am an internet & technology junkie. My primary diet consists of lots and lots of coffee! I am an avid reader, chronic over-punctuator!!?..!!, and I believe that music heals the soul. I have been blessed to be a part of the portrait & wedding industry for over 6 years now, where I specialize in lifestyle engagement and wedding photography. Photography is so much more than just a hobby or a job for me, it is a life source. I truly feel at home when one of my cameras are in my hand.

How did you get into the wedding industry?

My husband is a military veteran of 10 years so [at first] I could not offer wedding services, due to the military moving us on a whim. As soon as we learned we were moving back to Missouri I immediately started booking weddings. I was lucky that I had brides willing to invest with me, even when we were still 2,000+ miles away. Once we moved, I never looked back. I have always had a weakness when it comes to a good love story and my heart will always lie in capturing the moment when a couple commits to spending the rest of their lives with one another. I always say that even if I won the lottery-I will still be photographing weddings.

What is a favorite wedding moment for you?

I personally have two favorite parts to the wedding day. I love watching the couple get dressed and prepared for the ceremony. The anticipation and excitement is always such a fun moment to be a part of! Also, the first look, whether staged or when the bride first walks down the aisle, it gets me every…single..time. I cannot count the number of times I have cried at weddings. My heart is invested in each of my couple’s stories.

What types of services do you offer?

While I do take a limited amount of family sessions during the fall, I primarily provide engagement and wedding photography. My goal is to help keep the planning process as easy as possible. All of my couples have their own personal client site where they can where they can keep track of their contract, payment plan, and any applicable questionnaires related to their wedding planning. I also created a bridal guide to help them plan and make the most out of their wedding photography!

What creative ways have you seen brides save money?

I have seen a few “potluck” weddings. The couple provided the main dish and asked guests to bring a favorite (along with a copy of the recipe) as a side dish. This helped save on catering costs, as well as helped build their first cookbook filled with love from their family and friends.

Many couples make their own floral and decorative pieces as well. I do suggest investing in your bridal bouquet, even if you DIY many of the other floral arrangements. If the bride has a gorgeous bouquet, I can make the entire day look like there were beautiful florals everywhere. I highly recommend getting your DREAM bouquet and investing less in the bridesmaids bouquet since they will not be photographed nearly as much!

Share some advice you have for brides planning their weddings.

Make your wedding photography a priority. (I know that sounds like something I have to say as a photographer.) The truth is, once the day is over; the food has been eaten, flowers have wilted and your dress is hanging in the closet – your photos are what you have left. That is what you will have to look back at to remember this amazing day and be able to pass down to your children and grandchildren!

PLEASE Consider an un-plugged wedding! Not only does it allow your guests to truly be a part of your ceremony without the distraction of technology, but your photographer will be able to get much better photos. There is nothing worse than a photographer missing your first kiss because “Uncle Bob” stepped out into the aisle and blocked our shot! We want to ensure you have all of those key moments.

Don’t forget to take time for yourselves! Remember that your MARRIAGE is more important than the wedding. The wedding will come and go in a matter of hours but your marriage needs to stand the test of time. Continue to make time for one another, even with all that needs to get done.

Who are some of your favorite vendors to work alongside?

I love being a part of the local wedding community! There are honestly just too many amazing vendors to name, but I do offer a “Vendors We Love” list on my website! Hiring a wedding planner also helps assist in finding the perfect vendors to fit your needs and personality. When you are planning, make sure you aren’t just choosing by price alone. You want to find people and businesses that you click with because that will ensure you are much more likely to truly have your dream day!
(P.S. Any bride who books with us thru Bliss Events gets a $200 credit towards their Wedding Collection. Awesome, right?)

SAY WHAT?!? That makes my heart happy.

samuel cedars

Welcome back to the Bliss Vendor Tour! We’re kicking off another great week FULL of interviews and photos with amazing wedding professionals in the Springfield, Missouri area. If you missed last week, don’t forget to poke around a bit to find Haseltine Estate, He Loves Me Flowers, Touch and Flame Catering, and Mandy Evans Photography.
Today we’re stepping just southeast of town to a peaceful corner of the world in Rogersville. For ten years, lovely ladies in big white dresses have chosen to exchange vows with their beloveds in this serene grove of cedar trees. A giant, open-armed welcome to Dodi Thomas from Samuel Cedars Chapel and Event Center!
Hello! Tell us about yourself.
Our property was originally owned by my grandparents, Elmer and Lucille Samuel, and has a beautiful grove of cedar trees Grandpa had not really seen any value in. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!  My husband and I thought it was a beautiful spot and decided to clear part of the space for an outdoor wedding chapel.  This year marks our 10th anniversary and we have held almost 500 weddings.  It is wonderful to be able to witness couples starting their lives together and knowing that we have been a small part of that. I think if Grandpa could see it today, he would see that those cedar trees have found purpose after all!

Why do you love the wedding industry?
It is fun to help these couples on their big day!  It has grown into a full-time business that has allowed me to be more available to my family as well, which is wonderful! People often ask, “Did you dream of doing this all along?”  Not really 🙂  When the brides started coming out to tour the location, they expressed  a need for not only the outdoor chapel, but also a larger reception space.  We expanded our original plan for occupancy in the reception hall to accommodate larger groups and brides saw this as a great option!  Over the years, we have tried to add services and what is included with the rental to meet the needs of the couples and give them the most we can for their money.

What types of services do you offer?
Some extras included in our package are:
  • Set up of tables and chairs, including linens
  • Sound person/equipment for the wedding
  • Assistance w/parking
  • One hour Rehearsal
  • Monthly Open Houses for planning time for our brides
We also offer a range of optional services, like officiating, wedding directing, centerpieces and other rentals, outdoor arbor decor, decorating, onsite catering from Catering Creations, and onsite DJ services.
What are some of the favorite things about the services you offer?
Brides really like the fact that they can get so many things checked off their list when they rent with us – from the venue, the caterer, the DJ, a wedding director, some of the decor and access to many of our favorite vendors at our Open Houses.  It is peace of mind for them to know that they don’t have to do everything on their own and it makes it so convenient that we offer so many services at our location.   Because we have been in the industry for so long, with input from former brides, we have been able to offer the items that are most important  to make it less stressful for them. Discussing each couple’s vision helps form friendships– we have even had couples who have been married here attend other weddings held here and been able to see their growing families and it is truly a beautiful thing!

For better or worse, share a few memorable wedding moments with us.
WOW!  There is always a story to tell – some I definitely won’t repeat at this time!  One time, the minister for the service did not show up.  The caterer for the night was a friend of ours and also had performed many weddings. The wedding was themed so he was going to need to wear the appropriate costume.  He grabbed a Bible from my son’s room, put on the robe that was planned for the original minister and the ceremony went on without a hitch (as far as any of the guests knew).  On another occasion, the minister was the only one that showed up on the day of the wedding!  The couple had cancelled the wedding, but forgot to tell the minister that they were not getting married, so he showed up at the appropriate time dressed for a wedding.
One of my absolute favorite stories- there was a family who have had two of their family members have weddings at Samuel Cedar.  At the first wedding, one of the young ladies at the wedding met a young gentleman.  Those two went on to date each other and were engaged by the time the second wedding happened. Although that couple did not get married here at our facility, the wedding that took place here brought them together in the first place – love it!
Any advice for brides planning their wedding?
Make sure that you look at what all is included at each of the venues to find the place that works best for you.  You can love the look of a facility, but if their package doesn’t include much you end up spending much more! Stay true to the things that you really want included for your special day.  For instance, if you really want a bouquet of real flowers for your wedding, try to work that into the budget and spend a little less on something that is less important to you. Some brides want to do everything for themselves instead of letting others help.  Let your friends and family have a little joy by helping you on your day.  Sometimes doing everything yourself only adds more stress and doesn’t give you as much time to just enjoy the moment!
Thanks, Dodi! So happy to have you here!

When I ask brides about priorities for their wedding, can you guess the first word that comes out of their mouths? Photos.

Once the cake is eaten, the dress stored, and the marriage begun, there is only one thing that remains of this precious day. Photos.

Ten years from now, children will come along and marvel that you had a life before they existed. They will demand proof, at which time you will produce…photos.

Mandy Evans Photography has been featured in local wedding magazines Met Bride and 417 Bride–she is no joke when it comes to creating beautiful photographs that you’ll want to hang on to for a lifetime. In fact, you may just want to plan to wallpaper your new home with them.

Enough of my wordy words. Let’s look at some gorgeous photos and learn more about uber-talented Mandy 🙂

Hello! Tell us about yourself.

After graduating from college with a degree in photography and graphic design, I worked for an amazing wedding photographer in St. Louis who introduced me to the magic of weddings.  I was also planning my own wedding at the time.

A lot has changed since 2001 when I first began working in the industry.  I love how diverse wedding photography has become since then.

touch catering

The first night my husband and I ate at Touch was the night I declared it my favorite restaurant in all of Springfield. Seriously, this food is AMAZING. I had the Caesar salad and fainted (figuratively.) Our server brought out some warm muffins from the kitchen and I considered moving in (literally.) I ate the jalepeno cheddar polenta and I DIED. Died, ya’ll. (Okay, also figuratively.)

This place is made for date night, but I was so excited to learn that they can–and do!–cater weddings. Flexible pricing and plenty of menu options make it easy for clients to find something that fits their wedding vision, from butlered hors d’oeuvres to food bars to dinner buffets.

Note to my clients: Someone, pretty please, serve the Flame Baby Burger with caramelized onions and truffle aioli. If you can’t handle that much fun at a wedding, I’d happily settle for the Scottish Salmon with tarragon caper chardonnay butter (!!!)

But seriously, how cute would that photo be? A big white dress and a burger? So fun.

Without further ado, a huge welcome to Jacy from Touch and their sister restaurant, Flame.

Hello! Tell us about yourself.

Touch and Flame is a full service caterer.  In addition to providing our reputable food, we do anything and everything to assure a memorable evening for the bride and groom as well as their guests.

How did you get into the wedding industry?

We cater all types of events, and really started focusing on weddings about 5 years ago.  Booking only a few weddings in the first couple of years, we focused on the happiness of the bride, groom, and guests.  Fortunately, positive word of mouth about our business has led us to booking numerous weddings throughout any given year.  Putting on a successful wedding reception or rehearsal is extremely rewarding for Touch and Flame.  We pride ourselves on originality for each wedding, exceptional food, and above and beyond service.

In what ways have you seen weddings change since you joined the market?

I have noticed weddings are going more casual.  Bride and grooms are wanting more of a fun atmosphere with opportunities to mingle with everyone.  Popular ideas are going with food stations rather than your traditional buffet or plated dinner.  This way everyone is moving around and enjoying the company of all other guests rather than just the table they are seated.

What are some of your favorite things about the services you offer?

Our staff arrives early to set up everything, provides food and beverage service during the event, cuts and plates the cake, and stays until the venue is cleaner than it was upon arrival.  It is our pleasure to be able to take care of our vendors, so in addition to cleaning, we provide food for them too.  We also charge no rental fees.  Our motto is “Anything we own, you are free to borrow.”  This includes silverware, glassware, china dinnerware, and linens at no extra fee.  We have found this is a huge benefit to many bride and grooms trying to cut back on the budget.

he loves me flowers

Is there anything better than a bouquet of fresh flowers? Luscious colors, sweet fragrance, silky smooth petals.

Swoon.

This is how I feel about flowers when they are picked willy-nilly from the side of the road. This is how I feel about flowers when I’ve snatched them up at the last minute by the door at the grocery store.

How do I feel about them when they fall into the hands of an artist and are transformed into beauty-out-of-this-world? There are no words. Charity Bennitt of He Loves Me Flowers is just such an artist. Color, texture, vibe…Charity gets it. Plus, can’t you just tell she’s sweet as honey?

Dear clients: please book He Loves Me Flowers right now. Because I want Charity to be my best friend and bring me flowers when she comes to my house for dinner once a week.  Thank you.

Hello! Tell us about yourself.

I love arranging and designing flowers.

This love connection began the summer of 2007 when I was asked to work in a local flower shop in my hometown. It was through that experience, submersion, and hands on education where I learned floral technique and design. It was there that a dream was placed in my heart to one day start a family-owned floral design company specializing in weddings and events. Being raised in Minnesota by self-taught entrepreneurs as parents, I knew starting a business was achievable, especially if it was something that you loved and fueled your heart.

Through a series of events I moved to Springfield, Missouri in 2009 to attend college. Little did I know that I’d meet my charming husband in 2010, be married in 2011, and in 2012 launch my dream business. When I’m not nurturing He Loves Me Flowers, you’ll find me laughing, spending time with my family, cuddling with my pup, playing games and fellowshipping with friends, enjoying the fresh outdoors, reading a challenging book, or baking something delicious in the kitchen. I’ve learned life is most enjoyed when you see things through a positive lens and choose to be joyful through the good and the challenging moments of life.

How did you get into the wedding industry?

I actually started floral design in a local flower shop back in my hometown in Minnesota. While working at the shop, we did a plethora of weddings and I absolutely LOVED being a part of them! Through a series of events I moved to Springfield, attended college, married my husband and in 2012 we launched our floral design company specifically for weddings. I love this business because it allows me to not only be creative, but to use my gift of design to bless so many of my sweet clients. It’s really rewarding creating a floral work of art but it’s even more rewarding when those pieces bring incredible joy and happiness to the bride & groom, families and guests on one of the most significant days in a couples’ life! I feel incredibly blessed to do what I do! To say I love it might be an understatement. 😉

In what ways have you seen weddings change since you started He Loves Me Flowers?

I think in this present time, couples are being more creative with their weddings and the overall feel for their celebration. I think partly that is due to Pinterest and the flood of inspiration and ideas, but I feel that brides are making their weddings more about them and their specific lives rather than just a “pretty event” with their favorite colors. I’ve seen so many of my clients do very unique themes, combinations, color palettes, etc. because it is what reflects them as people, their personal style and aesthetic. I find that really fun and refreshing!!

What is a favorite wedding moment for you?

My  favorite wedding moment is presenting the bridal bouquet to the bride for the first time! It’s always an incredibly joyous (and many times teary-eyed) moment. It brings me so much joy and fulfillment to see a bride literally glowing when she sees her bouquet that I had the privilege of designing specifically for her wedding day. It’s humbling in an amazing way!

What types of services do you offer?

If it’s anything that has to do with floral design, flowers, greenery, etc. for your wedding, then we do it. 🙂

Tell us about your favorite wedding to work with, ever.

That’s a hard one! My favorite wedding I think was from May of 2015. The bride valued exceptionally designed florals and spared no expense in her floral decor. She loved flowers and wanted garlands, arrangements, centerpieces, etc. to be seen from every angle at her ceremony and reception. And boy can I tell you that it was AMAZING! The florals in the venues made all the difference in the feel and atmosphere of the event. It was on that day when I had the epiphany, “flowers really do make all the difference”. Looking backing, it was my most stretching event, but definitely my favorite!!!

Share some advice you have for brides planning their weddings.

My advice for a bride planning her wedding is to make the investment when it comes to your photographer, floral designer, and professional help. They are pros because they are good at what they do. Don’t get so worked up in the numbers. When it comes to a budget – I totally get that – but you have to remember this is your wedding (!) and many times in the creative world, you receive what you invest. Just because someone is cheaper, doesn’t mean that it’s a better decision. I’ve seen it play out. Choose vendors who you trust, love, are inspired by, and mesh well with! Having the right team of professional vendors will put you at ease and allow you to focus on what you are suppose to do and that is — getting married! 🙂

haseltine estate

Two words.

HIDDEN. GEM.

This place. Oh, this place! Haseltine Estate is essentially a petite little castle for the perfect fairytale wedding right here in Springfield. Built in 1897, the property boasts 10 acres of gorgeous green space, mature trees, and rich character throughout the mansion and grounds. When I visited, I would have jumped up and down and squealed (except it was my first time to officially meet the owners, Tyler and Natalie, and I didn’t want them to think I was…you know…weird.)

Actually, I may have squealed. I can’t really remember in the haze of giant windows, glistening chandeliers, and sweeping vistas.

Haseltine Estate can accommodate up to 200 guests for outdoor ceremonies and receptions, with more intimate gatherings taking place inside the mansion. Original staircases, a sparkling pool, stone walls and a whitewashed barn are just a handful of the backgrounds you’ll find for spectacular photo ops.

Oh, and did I mention their bridal loft? Their goal is to have the best bridal suite in Springfield.

Done: A full bathroom, kitchen, amazing furniture pieces, a balcony overlooking the peaceful tree line, and a glam makeup booth that will accommodate all those bridesmaids. The groom doesn’t have it too bad, either. He and the guys can kick it on the leather couch in the basement- Foosball, ping-pong, darts, a flat-screen TV, and a bar will keep them busy until it’s time to say “I do.”

I’m so in love with this place, I asked Tyler and Natalie if they would do the honors of kicking off our little vendor tour around the city. They agreed because they are nice like that.

Hello! Tell us about yourself.

We [Tyler and Natalie Langston] took ownership in December 2015 and are looking forward to a very successful first wedding season.

Share some advice you have for brides planning their weddings.

Always hire a wedding planner, even if it is just for the day of. They will take all of the stress relating to design, décor, vendors, and even takedown from you and your family’s shoulders. It is the best money you can spend during your entire experience.

Note to readers: I promise I did not pay him to say that 😉 It’s just soooo true.

What’s coming up for Haseltine Estate? Any promotions, special offers or events?

Currently we are offering a 10 percent discount to 2016 brides that haven’t booked a venue yet. Also, we are giving a $200 discount to all brides that have hired the services of a wedding planner.

Simply Delicious Catering because of the quality of the food, the cost of that quality food, their speedy response time, and their willingness to help. They are the best.

hello

Hello! I’m so excited to be launching Bliss Events in 2016. Check back here soon for more photos as we’re working on the website. In the meantime, a little more about Bliss Events…

My journey as an event planner began over 12 years ago with a public rally for nearly 200 young people and has developed through the years as I’ve orchestrated myriad productions- everything from dinner theaters, to community events, to formal dinners, to baby showers. My husband and I have been married for nearly ten years (!!!) and recently relocated from Nashville, Tennessee. I am thrilled to be joining the Springfield, Missouri wedding community.

I love to celebrate two people as they step out in adventure and start new life together. I am passionate about helping you tell your love story to a room full of teary-eyed guests as they revel in the beauty of your day. Would you let me come alongside you as you navigate the world of photos, catering, music, flowers, timelines and deadlines? My name is Steph Urich. It’s so lovely to meet you.
